Vegemite. Love it or Watch V Onlinehate it, it's a true icon of Australia.
The members of mega successful local pop band, 5 Seconds of Summer, painted with the spread in all its brown and streaky glory as part of Australia's National Vegemite Day Thursday. The band have previously waxed lyrical about the Aussie staple -- its closest cousin being Britain's Marmite.
While three of the paintings are clearly pretty average portraits of the band's members (we're guessing the long haired dude is meant to be Calum), one of the artworks is some kind of stick figure thing with a box on the right. Very art, very abstract.
The salty, gooey spread definitely divides tastebuds, especially in America where they just don't get it. It's made out of yeast extract, and Aussies get a kick out of watching those unaccustomed to the confronting taste try it for the first time.
Personally, we prefer Vegemite on the canvas rather on our toast. Ick.
