Star Wars has some great ships,Women Without Innocence but it also has some great ships, and Solois no exception. You know the ships I mean – ships that make you want to take straight to space, don a cape, and punch it right into hyperdrive.
Friendships. Relationships. Situationships. Star Wars has is it all, from the day Luke kissed his sister to the time Anakin went blind with love, or something. Let's dive into the ships of Soloand wonder how anyone had time to make the Kessel Run when there was so much flirting to get on with.
SEE ALSO: Who's who in 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'Han and Qi'ra have more chemistry in the first two minutes of Solothan 90 percent of couples in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (but we'll roast them more later). They kiss well and often, and if you go into this movie with the right mindset you can hear a lot of innuendo (like when their first escape is too tight a fit but Han tries it anyway). Solomakes a real case for Han and Qi'ra, for who they were and why they fell for each other when they did, without diminishing what we know to be Han's future and his inevitable meeting with Leia. This is how you do ships!
Captain Calrissian shares an undeniable bond with his sentient droid, L3-37. A lot of it is sassy banter, but we all know what that's hiding! L O V E. L3 doesn't mince words, so she even mentions it explicitly, but not to him. They give each other a lot of grief, but they're friends, co-pilots, and partners, and they share one of the film's most tender moments before the credits roll.
Soloreveals that this legendary bromance started as a bit of a will they/won't they, and that Han charmed Chewy, as one does a potential beau, by indulging in his shared interests (a.k.a. speaking Wookie). When they're not a dynamite team, they love to tease each other, and they're responsible for Star Wars' first shower scene in over 40 years.
When she first suggests turning to Lando for help, Qi'ra is visibly turned on by the mere memory of him. She's so effusive about his charm and suavity that it makes Han deeply insecure. It's unclear whether Lando and Qi'ra actually have a history (he tells her she looks "phenomenal" with a thorough look down during pleasantries), but at the very least they are two attractive people who have worked together in the past. We'll take it!
Thandie Newton is a goddamned gem and her work on Westworldshows she can turn even a whisper of chemistry into deafening on-screen steam (I'm talking about the robot sex with Rodrigo Santoro). Tobias and Val are of a different ilk, though; they've been partners in love and crime for a long time, we gather, to the point where we don't realize they're together until they kiss, literally to prove to Han that they're a thing. Maybe with more down time and less capers we'd get to explore their love, but not this time.
Mashable has already expressed that these characters should kiss, and sparks fly from the moment they see each other in Solo. They bond over a friendly/competitive game of space poker, but there's an underlying tension – not because Han has nothing to bet and is trying to win Lando's ship, but because they're totally into each other and who could blame either??
We're supposed to buy this parlaying into the kind of frenemyship Lando and Han have in Empire Strikes Back, but Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams did not eye each other the way these two do. At one point, Han puts his arm around Lando, and they even have an exchange with some shades of Han and Leia – another great ship!!
In Paul Bettany's second summer blockbuster, he had more chemistry with Clarke as her captor than Vision and Scarlet Witch ever had or will have. Still, this is a Bad Ship™ – Qi'ra was captured by his organization, the Crimson Dawn, and though he claims she's his "top lieutenant," there's little hiding that Dryden sees her as a warm body and a prize whose worth is in her loyalty.
Solois now in theaters.
