With Korean pop-culture spreading its wings globally,Korea Archives Netflix is moving quickly to jump on the K-drama bandwagon.
The streaming TV provider just announced plans to produce its first ever original Korean drama series, slated to be out in 2018.
SEE ALSO: The 8 Netflix features we desperately need in our livesThe series, titled Love Alarm, tells the story of a developer who releases a controversial app which lets users know if someone within 10 meters has romantic feelings for them.
The 12-episode series is based on a popular webtoon by Kyi Young Chon, a popular South Korean comic author.
“It is an honour for Netflix to collaborate with a great storyteller like Ms Chon for our very first Korean original production”, said Erik Barmack, VP of International Originals at Netflix in a statement.
"We look forward to transforming this wildly imaginative story into a top-quality drama series for over 86 million Netflix members around the world."
K-pop, or Korean pop music, has arguably achieved further reach in the West, on the backs of stars like Psy and Big Bang, but Korean TV has yet to reach equivalent popularity overseas.
With Love Alarmplanned for release to Netflix users in 190 countries, this might just be the show that changes that.
