"The seal had managed to make his way into the garden, just off a coastal road, through the fence," Naemi Kilbey, an RSPCA Animal Collection Officer, was quoted as saying in a press release sent to Mashable.
"The homeowner spotted him in the afternoon on New Year's Eve and, despite being well and truly lost, he luckily didn't have any obvious injuries or illness."
Kilbey went on to add that seals occasionally get lost when they travel up rivers in search of food.
After they'd established that this seal was not injured, he was taken back to the beach and released into the sea.
"It was so lovely to start the new year watching him swim back out to sea where he belongs. Hopefully, he'll find the new home he was looking for somewhere that's a little more seal-friendly!"
