Chevy is Watch Chrysalis Onlinecharging up its Silverado pickup truck.
A Tuesday announcement at the electric vehicle factory in Detroit-Hamtramck confirmed that the anticipated General Motors electric pickup truck would be a Chevrolet Silverado. The all-electric truck will use GM's new electric battery platform, Ultium, to power a 400-mile range on the full-size pickup.
The truck will be the newest edition to the long-established Silverado line, but it'll be a completely new design as an electric vehicle. GM president Mark Reuss didn't share much else at a virtual event streaming from GM's Factory Zero, but he said fleet and commercial versions of the all-electric pickup would also be made at the Detroit factory. That's the factory where GM's other EVs, like the Hummer and Hummer SUV, will be produced.
There's supposed to be more news about the electric Chevy Silverado in the coming months as rival Ford also prepares for a formal debut of its first electric pickup, a battery-powered F-150. Ford first announced the electric version of the popular truck in 2019. It's expected to start production as soon as 2022.
